Final project for this term's cg class, given title was, KL fashion week. Done using Illustrator CS. Wanted to do black and white at first, but the tutor suggested to add "some" spice and colour to the picture... so ... yea ^__^ I love kebaya, maybe my mom influenced me too much >.<
Warning: Ignore the rational below if you don't want to be drowned by my ranting X3
Rational
First of all, I chose to attempt using shapes to represent my model, that is why I used black and white for my figures. The white spaces represent the face white the black are the hair and the feature. I chose to use an Asian reference for the model due to the fact that the title was KL Fashion Week 2006. Obviously it would be appropriate to use an Asian, Namie Amuro to represent the Asian culture. The clothes she is wearing in this picture is a modern version of the baju kebaya.
Why baju kebaya? It is because this set of clothing was more commonly worn by the Babas and Nyonyas, or Peranakan Cina. Meaning the person is native by birth but has mixed blood. These people are sub-ethnic group of the Chinese community who has the fusion of Chinese and Malay lifestyle. In a way, I am trying to represent the fusion of fashion from different cultures, background, countries under one umbrella we all know was Kuala Lumpur. This is where most of all Asian fashion people meet to present their work, show their culture to the other countries and most of all to mingle with people from different races.
To further enchance the kebaya element in the piece, I used the hem of the kebaya’s clothing’s design as the key element in the design. The hexagon shape represents the hem of the kebaya while the flower motives represents the elements on the kebaya. White lilies symbolize innocence, which is referring to the innocence of a fair lady. Too add a modern feel; because we’re all living in a modern world, I added my own designs of circles and lines to spice up the feeling.
I redesigned the logo to suit this piece of poster. The city on top of the words is actually the kl city, to represent Kuala Lumpur. The hair forms the buildings. The words KL Fashion Week 2006 are in red to show emphasis on the words and to make the words stand out a little.
The colour theme is mostly red because red brings prosperity, it symbolizes happiness, happenings and loads of positive feel too. KL Fashion week is a happening thing, what more to use red as it main colour theme.
For the background, I opt to use batik as the main design because other than the baju kebaya, Malaysia’s Batik is a well known handicraft most tourists go for. Hibiscus were used to show the Malaysian element in the poster due to the fact that hibiscus are the national flower of Malaysia. Turquoise blue with hint of green were used as the background colour to balance out the amount of red on the right side, making the poster more balanced.
